Why Train Wrestling

The Benefits of
Wrestling.

Wrestling is a full-body sport that develops strength, conditioning and control at the same time. Here is what regular training builds.

Strength
Functional Full-Body Strength
Pushing, pulling, lifting and holding a resisting partner builds real strength through the legs, hips, core, back and grip.
Conditioning
Serious Fitness
Short, intense bursts of effort with little rest build both anaerobic power and the endurance to keep working when you are tired.
Balance
Balance & Body Control
Wrestling teaches you to stay balanced in contact, control your body position and use your strength efficiently — not just have it.
Rugby
An Edge in the Contact Area
Better balance, grip and body position carry straight into tackling, rucking, mauling and scrummaging — and help you control collisions safely.
Grappling
The Foundation for MMA & BJJ
Takedowns, takedown defence and top control are the base of every strong grappling game, in the cage or on the mat.
Character
Discipline & Resilience
Wrestling rewards hard work, consistency and the ability to keep going under pressure — habits that carry over into school, work and life.

When are the wrestling classes?
Wrestling runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6pm to 7:30pm (18:00–19:30) at Maddog Performance Institute, 22 Sandra Road, Balvista Centre, Ballito.
How much does wrestling cost at Maddog?
Wrestling for Rugby is R650 per month, or R150 per drop-in class with no commitment. Your first class is free.
Who coaches wrestling at Maddog?
Philip Lemmer — a 12-time South African Wrestling Champion, former professional rugby player and professional rugby coach, currently forwards coach at The Sharks. He holds a B.Ed teaching degree from the University of Johannesburg and is a World Rugby Level 3 coach.
Is wrestling good for rugby players?
Yes. Wrestling builds the balance, body position, grip strength and control that rugby players need in tackles, rucks, mauls and scrums. Philip has used wrestling principles in professional rugby, including as collisions and rucking coach at the Lions.
Will wrestling help my MMA or BJJ?
Yes. Wrestling is the foundation of takedowns and top control. At Maddog you can also train MMA and BJJ alongside wrestling to build a complete grappling game.
